My job makes me regularly travel to Pathein. I really enjoy
spending time there. Located in the Irrawaddy Delta, it is the perfect getaway
from Yangon (4 hours by bus)! Pathein is also a good stop on the way to Chaungtha and Ngwe Saung
beaches.
What to do?
Pathein is
situated on the riverbank of the Irrawaddy. Walking along the riverbank is very
pleasant. There are many teashops and restaurants where you can enjoy fresh
seafood.
Another good way to enjoy the riversides is to go to the night
market. Every night, starting from 6pm, street shops and restaurants take place
on the riverside. The atmosphere is really nice and it is a good opportunity to try
local food!
Downtown
Like in every city in Myanmar, you will find a pagoda: the
Shwemokhtaw Pagoda. Downtown has also a number of old building form the
colonial era.
Pathein is the capital of Umbrellas. You can visit the
factory named Shwe Sar and learn how those colorful and hand-made Umbrella are
made!
Lake
North of the city, there is a lake with lots of animations.
Family and young couple love to spend their evenings.
Another thing I loved to do is going to watch the sunset at the Lawkananda Pagoda. It is a very peaceful place !
What to eat?
The famous glue soup |
One of the famous Pathein dishes in the “glue soup”. Myanmar people eat it as a breakfast or as an afternoon snack. It is really good!
Rakhine Restaurant at the corner of Jall Road and 28 Pagoda raod. I highly recommend this Rakhine seafood restaurant. I advise to ask not spicy and to try their seafood salads and
coconut juice!
Perfect restaurant. The restaurant is near the Shwemokhtaw Pagoda.
You can find good Shan and Thai food.
